Tanzania enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year, making it an ideal destination for travel in any season. Weather varies depending on altitude and geography, playing a key role in planning your safaris, beach holidays, and mountain treks. Day temperatures usually range between 22°C – 31°C, dropping to 10°C – 22°C at night.

Tanzania's Four Seasons

Long Dry Season

June – October

Best wildlife viewing as animals gather near water sources.
Sunny days with clear blue skies and low rainfall.
Cooler mornings and evenings (perfect for layering).

Short Dry Season

January – February

Warm temperatures with occasional light showers.
Best For: Calving season in the Serengeti.
Excellent lighting for wildlife photography.

Short Rains

November – December

Light to moderate afternoon showers.
Still an excellent time for travel and safaris.
Lush green scenery begins to return.

Long Rains

March – May

Heavy rainfall (peak in April) creating lush green landscapes.
Fewer tourists and much lower prices at luxury lodges.
Tip: Some remote roads may be harder to access.

Regional Differences

Coastal Areas (Zanzibar)

Hot and humid year-round with temperatures between 25°C – 35°C. The ocean breeze makes it perfect for beach holidays almost anytime.

Northern Highlands

Includes Ngorongoro & Kilimanjaro. Cooler temperatures during the day and very cold nights. Essential for trekking prep.

Central Tanzania

Areas like Dodoma are much drier and warmer with significantly less humidity than the coastal regions.
