The Ultimate Challenge

6 Days Umbwe Route

The Umbwe Route is widely regarded as the most difficult but spectacular path up Mount Kilimanjaro. It is a steep, short, and direct climb that requires physical stamina and mental toughness. Because of its rapid ascent, it offers very little time for acclimatization, making it suitable only for experienced high-altitude hikers. For those who take the challenge, the rewards are dramatic ridges and quiet trails away from the crowds.

Day 1 Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

Elev: 1,600m to 2,850m 11km 5-7 Hours

The trek begins through a winding jungle path that follows a narrow ridge between two deep valleys. The rainforest is thick and atmospheric. As the trail gains altitude rapidly, you will notice the vegetation changing until you reach the Umbwe Cave Camp, nestled under giant trees and rock overhangs.

Day 2 Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp

Elev: 2,850m to 3,900m 6km 4-5 Hours

Today the forest ends and the trail continues along the "Umbwe Ridge." The path is narrow and steep, offering heart-pounding views. As we descend slightly into the Barranco Valley, you are greeted by the magnificent Great Barranco Wall and the strange-looking Giant Senecio plants.

Day 3 Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elev: 3,900m to 3,995m 5km 4-5 Hours

We start by scrambling up the Great Barranco Wall. From the top, we enjoy views of the Heim Glacier. The trail then follows a series of ridges and valleys until we reach Karanga Camp. This shorter day is vital for allowing your body to catch up with the altitude after the rapid climb of the first two days.

Day 4 Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elev: 3,995m to 4,673m 4km 4-5 Hours

Leaving Karanga, we hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the Barafu Camp. The landscape is now a pure alpine desert with strong winds. We have an early dinner and try to sleep early to prepare for the midnight summit bid.

Day 5 SUMMIT DAY: Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka

Elev: 4,673m to 5,895m 18km (Total) 12-15 Hours

Wake up at midnight for the final push. The climb to Stella Point is mentally and physically draining. From there, it's a final trek to Uhuru Peak! After celebrating, we begin a long descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for a well-deserved night of sleep.

Day 6 Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elev: 3,100m to 1,640m 10km 3-4 Hours

A gentle walk back through the lush rainforest. At the gate, you will receive your certificates and meet your driver. A short transfer takes you back to Arusha for a celebratory hot shower and dinner.
