The Northern Approach

7 Days Rongai Route

The Rongai Route is the only path that starts from the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, near the Kenyan border. It is a fantastic alternative for those seeking a quieter trek with a true wilderness feel. Because the north receives less rainfall, it is the best route to choose during the wet seasons. The descent follows the Marangu route, allowing you to see both sides of the mountain.

Day 1 Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Elev: 1,950m to 2,625m 7km 3-4 Hrs

After a long drive to the northern gate, we begin our trek through cypress forests and potato fields. As we enter the moorland zone, the forest thins out, offering wide views toward the Amboseli plains in Kenya. We arrive at Simba Camp for our first night under the stars.

Day 2 Simba Camp to Second Cave

Elev: 2,625m to 3,450m 6km 3-4 Hrs

A steady ascent takes us through the moorland. You will see several unique plants like the Giant Senecios. The trail is relatively easy compared to southern routes, allowing for a relaxed pace and excellent photography of the Kibo peak ahead.

Day 3 Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp

Elev: 3,450m to 3,600m 6km 3-4 Hrs

We head southeast across the moorland toward the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. The day is short, which is perfect for acclimatization. Kikelewa Camp is tucked in a valley near giant groundsels, providing a quiet and scenic resting spot.

Day 4 Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn

Elev: 3,600m to 4,330m 6km 3-4 Hrs

A short but steep climb up grassy slopes. We arrive at the Mawenzi Tarn camp, situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi Peak. The afternoon is free to explore the surrounding ridges to aid acclimatization.

Day 5 Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

Elev: 4,330m to 4,700m 9km 5-6 Hrs

We cross the lunar-like "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape is desolate and beautiful. We reach Kibo Hut at the base of the summit crater. The rest of the day is spent resting and preparing for the midnight summit bid.

Day 6 SUMMIT DAY: Kibo to Uhuru Peak to Horombo

Elev: 4,700m to 5,895m 16km 12-15 Hrs

Wake up at midnight. We climb the steep scree to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, then push forward to Uhuru Peak. After standing on the Roof of Africa, we descend to Kibo Hut for lunch and continue down to Horombo Hut.

Day 7 Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Elev: 3,720m to 1,860m 20km 5-7 Hrs

The final descent takes us through the moorland and back into the lush rainforest. At the Marangu Gate, we sign out and receive our certificates. Meet your driver for the celebration dinner back in Arusha.
