Most Scenic Route

8 Days Lemosho Route

The Lemosho Route is widely considered to be the most beautiful path on Kilimanjaro. Starting on the western side of the mountain at Lemosho Glades, this 8-day trek offers low crowds initially and a high success rate due to its excellent acclimatization profile. It traverses the Shira Plateau and joins the Machame route on Day 4, providing a varied and stunning landscape experience.

Day 1 Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa

Elev: 2,100m to 2,650m 7km 3-4 Hrs

Drive from Arusha to Londorossi Gate for registration. You'll then drive further to the Lemosho trailhead. The hike starts through a beautiful, undisturbed rainforest where you can often spot large wildlife like buffaloes or elephants.

Day 2 Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

Elev: 2,650m to 3,500m 8km 5-6 Hrs

Leave the forest behind as the trail steepens into the moorland zone. You will cross several streams and walk along the Shira Ridge before dropping gently into Shira 1 Camp, located on the edge of the plateau.

Day 3 Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Elev: 3,500m to 3,850m 7km 3-4 Hrs

A gentle trek across the Shira Plateau. This day is designed for acclimatization. You will explore the cathedral-like rock formations and enjoy the vast open space before reaching Shira 2 Camp for the night.

Day 4 Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp

Elev: 3,850m to 3,900m Max: 4,600m 6-8 Hrs

Climb high to the Lava Tower (4,600m) for lunch. This is a crucial day for your body to adjust to higher altitudes. You will then descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley to sleep lower, following the "climb high, sleep low" rule.

Day 5 Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elev: 3,900m to 3,995m 5km 4-5 Hrs

Conquer the Great Barranco Wall, a non-technical scramble that offers the best views of the mountain’s southern glaciers. The trail then winds through hills and valleys until you reach Karanga Camp.

Day 6 Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elev: 3,995m to 4,673m 4km 4-5 Hrs

The trek joins the Mweka Route. The landscape becomes a pure alpine desert. We arrive at Barafu (Base Camp) early to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight summit push.

Day 7 SUMMIT DAY: Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka

Elev: 4,673m to 5,895m 15km 12-15 Hrs

The most challenging day. Start at midnight, reaching Stella Point at dawn. A final push brings you to Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa! After the celebration, descend to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved long sleep.

Day 8 Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elev: 3,100m to 1,640m 10km 3-4 Hrs

A gentle walk back through the lush rainforest. At the gate, collect your certificates and meet your driver for the transfer back to your hotel for a celebratory dinner.
