Udzungwa Mountains National Park is a world-class destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Known as the "Galapagos of Africa" due to its incredible levels of endemism, the park is part of the ancient Eastern Arc Mountains. Unlike traditional savannah parks, Udzungwa is explored entirely on foot. Its closed-canopy rainforests stretch from 250 to 2,000 meters, hiding a treasure trove of plants and animals found nowhere else on the planet. It is a place of misty peaks, emerald valleys, and the thunderous roar of cascading water.
Udzungwa is home to eleven primate species, two of which are found only here: the Iringa Red Colobus and the Sanje Crested Mangabey. As you hike through the dense forest, the canopy often comes alive with the calls and movement of these rare monkeys. Birdwatchers will also find the park rewarding, with over 400 species including the Udzungwa Forest Partridge. The park's isolation over millions of years has turned it into an evolutionary island, making every step a potential encounter with a rare species.
The hike to Sanje Waterfalls is the park's most iconic trail. Climbing through the forest, you reach the top of a 170-meter waterfall that plunges into the Kilombero Valley below. The views from the summit are breath-taking, stretching across vast sugarcane plantations and distant horizons. After the hike, there is nothing more refreshing than a swim in the cool, crystal-clear plunge pools at the base of the falls. For more experienced trekkers, multi-day expeditions to Mwanihana Peak offer a true wilderness challenge and a deeper dive into the heart of the mountains.
